The Rolling Thunder First Amendment Demonstration Run

is an annual Memorial Day gathering that began in 1988. Motorcycle riders from around the nation, and even around the world rally in the Pentagon parking lots and then begin riding a designated route through the Mall area of Washington, DC. The event, often incorrectly called a parade, is an actual demonstration to bring awareness to and demand accountability for POW’s and MIA’s. It has evolved into an emotional display of respect for all who defend our country. Afterward, it is an opportunity to meet old and new friends, pay respect at the memorials and participate in other Memorial Day events.

Rolling Thunder Today

In the year 2020, AMVETS began to host the Rolling Thunder event making way for the younger generation to add their experiences to the mission and giving the Vietnam Era generation a much needed rest. They marked this change by naming it Rolling To Remember  and advocating for the veteran suicide issue and ways to prevent this tragedy, as well as POW/MIA accountability.

The transition took place during the height of the pandemic which logistically hindered the attendance, however, it continues to grow back with every passing year. The Pentagon is welcoming back riders to rally in the Pentagon parking lot and one by one the riders and supporters are returning and restoring the grandeur of the event.
